Steve's Story
Church three times on a Sunday, and several times in the
week - that's how I was brought up.
As a child, I heard many sermons in church, and Bible stories
in Sunday School. But quite early on, I realised that just
'doing church' was not what God wanted; neither was it going
to be good enough to get me into Heaven when I died.
I was at a Christian holiday camp in 1971 in Shaftesbury,
Dorset, with the church from Swansea. I was aged 11. Many
of my friends explained that they had 'become Christians'.
This really confused me, because I thought that they were
already Christians. I certainly thought that I was a Christian.
But I realised that whilst I had learnt many things about
God, I didn't know God personally. As soon as I could, I prayed
to God to forgive me for my sin, and for him to become the
Lord of my life. Immediately I knew a peace, relief, security
and happiness that is very hard to explain, but was very real
even at that young age. It has remained with me to this day.
Since then my commitment to God has varied on occasions,
but I know his commitment to me has always remained exactly
the same. Time and agin, he has proven himself to be a guide,
a healer, an encourager and friend. He has given me wisdom,
confidence, strength and a moral compass in whatever circumstance
I have faced.
Without any doubt whatsoever, my decision to become a follower
of Jesus Christ has been the most important I have ever taken.
